June 15, 2017Immigration agents may arrest crime victims, witnesses at courthouses
Washington Post reported on April 4, 2017 that homeland security officials reaffirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents or ICE may arrest crime victims and witnesses at courthouses according to its long-standing policy.
In the past, such arrest seems to happen only rarely. However, in a recent case, an undocumented woman was arrested at a courthouse in Texas when she went to the court to file a protective order against an alleged abuser.
Although the spokesman of the department tried to assure that some undocumented immigrants who have been subjected to sexual assault and domestic violence can apply for U visas to stay in the country, the government only offers 10,000 such visas per year.
